Vocational - Technical
School
The
Computer School at Guyanese Outreach Vo-Tech is one of the first
computer schools in Corriverton.
It opened its doors 9 years ago, and
continues to serve students and the community at large.
GO Vo-Tech’s training reaches the
elderly, the middle aged, young people, secondary school students,
teachers of both Primary and Secondary schools, the surrounding
communities and villages. GO’s curriculum is designed in a very
simple manner. It
allows even those that have not had a Secondary Education
to be able to learn more. GO takes anyone that is willing to
lean.
GO offers the following courses in
computers: Introduction to Computer, Computerized Typing, Microsoft
Word I, II, III; Microsoft Windows, MS Excel I, II, MS Power Point,
MS Access I, II and the Internet. The computer lab is equipped with
25 computers (some very old 486s,
we are desperately in need of donations of
newer computer equipment) printers, and
other equipment.
In almost every institution in
Corriverton, one can find employees who
were formerly GO’s students that successfully completed our Computer
Courses and are on better paying jobs. Our three full time computer
instructors have been able to touch the lives of our students in a
positive way.
The
Sewing Skills Program is equipped with residential and
commercial sewing machines and other sewing equipment. Replacement
of sewing machines
is quickly becoming necessary.
Skills such as Hand Embroidery,
Knitting, Cushion, Sewing, Craft, Floral Arrangement and Garment
Construction classes have been taught since 1998. Single parents,
housewives, teachers, vendors, Primary and Secondary school students
have benefited from our classes. These classes are free and anyone
can enroll. Since 1998 our enrollment has exceeded 900 students. GO
has two full time sewing instructors who were trained by a qualified
US instructor.
When the Vo-Tech building was turned
over to GO it had no roof, windows or doors. One might think it
would be a simple process to add these items especially with the
small grant from an agency of the Guyana Government. Not so, it was
a painful but enriching experience.
There was no easy way but to yield to His Word, "Be anxious about
nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with
thanksgiving let your request be made known to God". (Phil. 4:6)
GO did rehabilitate the Vo-Tech building
and dedicated it on June 28, 1998 for the sewing and computer
classes. The plaque on the all reads "This building is dedicated to
His glory. Love ye one another as I have loved you".
